My reflection
My name is Salman Alarifi, and I like writing. In the very beginning, I hated writing, I have always thought that writing is a boring waste of time. Not until I joined Dr.Kyburz class. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to study not only in this class but also Collage writing 1 in the past semester with Dr.Kyburz. I even wrote an ePortfolio reflecting about the past semester but words are never enough with Dr. Kyburz class experience. Not only the professor was great, but also the students in the class were always lovely to me and also try to help me when I need help. When we started College Writing 2 class I felt confident; I said that I would not be afraid of the large projects like writing long summaries and also writing research papers about a particular problem. I promised my self that I will be different from last semester when I was afraid that Americans are better than me and I kept my promise until the end of the semester.
In the beginning, we started with summarizing films; I chose a movie called “Cartel Land”. Summarizing the film was a fantastic experience for me although I have already summarized movies in College Writing 1, but I loved how fast and improved I became with summarizing “Cartel Land” in College Writing 2. Although the film was long and had lots of dialogue, but I successfully picked up the essential dialogues and wrote what’s essential in the story and summarized it. To be honest, summarizing a film a lot of fun! I felt like I want to write summaries of movies more often and somehow help people with it in some way. Overall, It was a phenomenal experience.
The following project was called the rhetorical analysis summary. It was the hardest project to me although professor Kyburz thought it was the easiest. It was summarizing a very short article that was written by Laura C. Mallonee. This article was horrible to me! Because it was very short and also was written in a wrong way. But I guess the reason for writing such a paper is to challenge us to write about the writer more than the paper itself. We had to use three appeals: logos ethos and pathos. However, we also learned about the elements of arguments which when we make a claim about a writer like Mallonee, we support our claims. Although this project was hard to me, in the end, I learned a lot!
The most fun project was the last one. Dr.Kyburz gave us an assignment that requires us to choose a problematic subject that is happening and write about it. It is called Surprising/Informative argument paper. I chose to write about the Syrian refugee's crisis. Although the writing was fun to me, it made me sad because my paper was focused on sad/happy stories about Syrian refugees who had success stories of surviving the crisis. The paper was about something very recent and still an ongoing issue but I did it! I would never have done it without Dr.Kyburz help in the beginning.
All in all, this class would be an unforgettable experience for me. It will not only help me in college but also will help with my future. Everything requires writing and I’m thankful to take this amazing class with a fantastic professor and even amazing friends.
