Difference between high school and Collage
All of us have been through the countless hours filling out university and scholarship applications and visiting colleges. It must be a great hassle. I have been through all that. I visited up to 5 Universities and ten colleges all around my country. And it wasn’t easy. The anxiety and fear were also experienced. By eventually, I chose to study in the United States. After asking my parents and ask my relatives who are already studying in the USA about how is studying in the USA different to Saudi Arabia in the workload and class structure etc. “It was easy, and all the professors are very helpful and lovely,” they said. But the disadvantage is that I have to learn English first so I can study in the university. I accepted this challenge, and I have traveled to the US and eventually started my college journey here at Lewis University.
Studying in the university is different than studying in high school in many ways and aspects. First, teachers. Or in university they are professors. I found it different in the college that the professors are harder to communicate with than teachers in high school. In the college, you must take an appointment with the professor, but with teachers, you can just talk to them in the hallway. Second, workload. In high school, the teacher gives us short assignments. But on the other hand, professors give us papers and tons and tons of assignments. Which is not good for me in my social life. Sometimes papers make me depressed and bored. But I always am patient, and I think of the future result which is graduation. Third, Responsibility. Responsibility is so different in the university. In high school, the teachers are like your parents they remind you of everything. Like reminding you of exams or homework etc. But on the other side, professors have a syllabus, and they are not responsible if you didn’t study for an exam. They will always say that it’s not my responsibility if you didn’t read the syllabus. So high school is so different from university in self-responsibility.
In success, I found myself getting higher grades than high school and I blame the education environment for that. In university, you have a whole campus you can walk in, and you can visit any of your friend’s dorms any time you want. It’s freedom. But in high school, you don’t have freedom. You can’t leave the class as you want. You can’t be absent for no reason. And you can get bullied by other students while in university you are on your own. No one will ever talk to you if you don’t talk to them. That’s what I like the most about university and college life. And when it comes to the use of time, it’s different when it comes to playing video games for example. In high school, I used to play video games at least three hours every single day. But now, I haven’t played video games since I started college. Even in the weekends. The workload prevents you from playing video games.
What I have like the most when I became a college student is meeting new friends from all around the globe. You learn from them, and they learn from you. When you get in trouble, they are always there for you. And I think it’s one of the crucial factors in being a college student. While in high school is different. In high school, everyone is selfish and stressed in their love life. For example, in college, when you miss a class. They will give you their notes, and they will explain everything you don’t understand. While in school, everyone is on its own. Meeting friends from your major is an essential factor. And that’s what I did. I met a lot of friends from different countries. Including Africa, Asia, and Europe. And one of the important goals is to meet the Americans. Why? Because I came to practice my English in the university and I, think it’s the best way to practice.
In conclusion, transmitting from high school to college was the critical moment of my life. I think high school should educate their student about how life inside the campus is going to be. And what I like the most about Lewis University is the introduction to college experience (ICE) classes. I learned a lot from these classes about wellness, anger management, stress, and anxiety. Which was a major help for me on the campus Hopefully, every student learns from these classes and know how to handle the college and differentiate college from University.
